More storage is not always better storage
A deep pantry can hold a large amount of food and still be frustrating if everything disappears behind the front row. Useful storage lets homeowners see, reach, and return everyday items without unloading half a shelf.
Match depth to what will be stored
Cans, boxes, small appliances, bulk packages, and serving pieces have different space needs. During kitchen remodeling, deciding what belongs in the pantry helps determine whether shallow shelves, deeper pullouts, drawers, or a combination makes sense.
Location affects daily convenience
A pantry near the food-prep area can reduce steps, while one near the entry may make grocery unloading easier. The best location depends on the room and household habits. Storage should support the kitchen work zones instead of creating another traffic problem.
Door swing can consume useful space
A pantry door that collides with another door, blocks a walkway, or covers cabinet access can make a good storage area annoying. Check the full swing and the space needed to stand in front of the pantry with the door open.
Visibility prevents forgotten food
Lighting and shelf arrangement matter inside larger pantry areas. Dark corners and shelves that are too deep encourage duplicate purchases because items become difficult to see. Simple organization works better when the physical layout supports it.
Leave room for changing needs
Households change how they shop and cook. Adjustable shelving or flexible storage zones can adapt more easily than highly specialized compartments designed around one temporary habit.
Coordinate the pantry with cabinets
The pantry does not have to hold everything. Everyday dishes, cookware, utensils, and frequently used ingredients may work better in cabinets near their point of use. Treat the pantry as one part of the entire storage plan.
Design storage around real groceries
A pantry should make the kitchen easier, not just increase a square-footage number. See Loughman’s project portfolio, and contact Loughman Builders & Remodelers for kitchen remodeling in Belleville and the Metro-East.
