Tile is installed one piece at a time, but the finished bathroom is viewed as a whole. Starting lines, cut sizes, grout joints, niches, and transitions can make the difference between a layout that looks deliberate and one that looks improvised.
Start with the existing conditions
Wall dimensions rarely divide perfectly by the selected tile size. Planning where cuts will fall can help avoid tiny slivers in prominent corners or around highly visible features.
Plan around daily use
Niches deserve special attention because their edges and shelves interrupt the field of tile. Their dimensions should be coordinated with framing, waterproofing, and the tile layout rather than selected independently.
Coordinate the construction details
Fixtures and valves also become part of the pattern. Centerlines and penetrations can look more intentional when the tile layout and plumbing locations are considered together where practical.
Keep long-term practicality in mind
Floor and wall transitions should be planned as well. Changes in material, curb details, base treatments, and outside corners all need clean stopping points.
Bring the project together
Bathroom remodeling gives homeowners the opportunity to coordinate tile with the room before installation begins, which is much easier than trying to correct an awkward pattern after the material is already on the wall.
